Common questions

Is the first weighing free?

While we offer it, the first weighing on each install of the app is free: one weight unlock per install, with the range and the dollar figure, no code needed. Seeing the assessment itself (breed, age, photo check, health notes, confidence and warnings) is always free. The free weighing is a gift, not a contract term, and we may withdraw or change it. If you have already paid for an unlock, withdrawing the free weighing does not affect it.

What does the App Store charge?

Seeing the breed, confidence and warnings is free. Unlocking the weight for one animal is one purchase; in Australia it is A$1.00. Weighing packs of 50 to 500 weighings, and the optional PDF report, are separate purchases. Prices differ from country to country. The App Store shows the exact price in your local currency before you buy, and that is the price you pay. Every purchase is a one-off: nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel. Apple takes the payment, and we never see your card details. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

How do I restore a purchase?

Weighing packs can be restored. On a new phone, or after you reinstall, open the Weighing packs list in the app and tap "Restore my packs". It finds packs bought with the same Apple account and brings back the weighings left in them. It needs iOS 18 or later and the latest version of the app. Single unlocks, the free first weighing and past results are not restored. If you paid for a single unlock and the weight did not appear, open the app again: it picks up that purchase by itself and uses it for your next animal, so do not buy again to fix it. We never see your Apple ID.

Do I need an account?

No. CattleScale has no sign in of any kind. We do not collect or hold your name, email address, phone number or password. A purchase is proved by a signed token that carries no identity.

How do I get a better reading?

The number is an estimate from photographs, not a weigh scale. The biggest help is a known scale in the photos: put the printed ruler sheet in the shot (print it at 100%), clipped to a rail or held flat against the animal's shoulder. The app finds it by itself. You can also choose something of known size from the app's list, or mark a known length on a photo, and a square, head-on front photo helps too. These apply when you take the photos. To sharpen a reading you already have, retake the photos and weigh again. That is a new assessment, so its weight needs its own unlock.

What happens to my photographs?

We do not store your photographs. They are held in our server's memory for the length of the request and are never written to a disk or a database. To be read, they are sent to Google (Gemini) in the United States, or to OpenAI if Gemini returns nothing usable, sometimes more than once for one animal. That company may keep what we send it for a short time under its own terms, for abuse monitoring, before deleting it. Your photographs are never sent to our analytics service and are hidden in any screen recording. The full detail is in the privacy policy.
